[Christine and Raoul's] greatest delight came when, after the sun had sunk into the sea and the great peace of twilight had settled over the countryside, Christine's father sat down with them on the roadside and in a quiet voice, as if to avoid frightening the ghosts he evoked, told them the beautiful, gentle, or terrible legends of the Northland. They were sometimes as charming as Andersen's fairy tales, sometimes as sad as the lyrics of the great poet Runeberg. When he stopped, the two children would say, "More!"
There was one story that began this way: "A king was sitting in a little boat on one of those calm, deep lakes that open like shining eyes among the mountains of Norway." And another that began: "Little Lotte thought of everything and nothing. She floated in the golden sunlight like a summer bird, wearing a crown of flowers on her blond curls. Her soul was as clear and blue as her eyes. She was affectionate to her mother and faithful to her doll, she took good care of her dress, her red shoes, and her violin, but what she liked most of all was to listen to the Angel of Music as she was falling asleep." While Daae was saying these things, Raoul looked Christine's blue eyes and golden hair. And Christine thought that little Lotte was lucky to hear the Angel of Music as she was falling asleep. There were few of Papa Daae's stories in which the Angel of Music did not appear, and the two children questioned him endlessly about that Angel. He claimed that all great composers and performers were visited by the Angel of Music at least once in their lives. [...] Little Christine asked her father if he had heard the Angel. He sadly shook his head, then looked at her with eyes shining and said, "You'll hear him some day, my Child. When I'm in heaven I'll send him to you, I promise."
