Luciana's Garden

Description

"What's the matter with these stupid plants?" Luciana said after a moment's disgusted contemplation of the urns. "Why are all the leaves turning yellow and falling off like this?" I sighed and remained silent, but, as I returned to my book, I was surprised to see Erik put down his chisel and go over to touch the withering blooms with angry regret. It was the first time I had ever seen him approach her of his own accord.
"They're dying of neglect", he told her shortly. "Can't you see that?"
"They're not neglected!" she flared. "I water them every day. Every day without fail!"
"You haven't watered them for over a week!" he snapped suddenly. "Look at the soil, it's rock hard!"
"Oh, you!" Without any warning Luciana threw the little brass can at him. "You think you're so clever, don't you ... the all-seeing, all-knowing oracle! How dare you tell me I'm too stupid even to grow flowers! How dare you!"
[...]
I left him and went to the edge of the stairs. When I glanced back I could see that he had filled the brass can, and had already begun to move like a shadow between the urns.

What an interesting picture! I really like having a visual to that scene.

I'm always riveted by that part of Susan Kay's novel, it's (as usual) a blend of hope - Eric finding a father figure and learning a trade and having a safe place - and tragedy, and I don't view Giovanni very charitably. It's hardly Luciana's fault if her father spoils her rotten and then, when he realizes that he messed up, unloads her off first to her sisters and then to school.

I'm never quite sure how Eric viewed her - personally I think he pretty much hated her; Giovanni at one point said he must be in love with her, but that's hard to imagine seeing how she blew the one safe place he had to bits and pieces. What do you think?
